Quicken’s Loans definitely has nothing on Saginaw Bay, as the bay’s walleye fishery is definitely “engineered to amaze”. Over 20 walleye came to the net in a few minutes over three hours. Amazing! And everyone seemed to be catching fish, as landing nets were constantly scooping up walleye.
The hot action today was on a line between Gravely Shoals Light and
Point Au Gres and everywhere in between, as fishermen established a line on their GPS units and just kept working it until they had limited out. There was also a significant number of under-size fish in the fishery today, representing at least two new year classes, which definitely bodes well for coming years’ fisheries.
A couple of anglers were on the radio asking what to do about “tagged fish”. The answer to that is call the information into the DNR. They’ll let fishermen keep the tags, but the information the DNR gets from tagged fish is vital to their understanding of the walleye populations and their movement in and out of the bay. Also, should one be lucky enough to catch a tagged fish with an “R” or “Reward” on it, it could bring as much as $100 to the lucky angler, as some of the fish have tracking transmitters embedded in their bodies to track their travels.
This is also the time to get the youngsters out fishing, as they would never have time to get bored! The action is that good. And a kid hooked on fishing will keep from getting hooked on things he/she shouldn’t get hooked on.
