Saginaw Bay Fishing Report
The red hot walleye fishing straight out of Augres in the 31-41-foot depths has gradually tapered off this week, but some nice catches have come to the cleaning tables all week. The east side of the shipping channel has been quite productive as have the waters south of point AuGres, where anglers have been trolling between 24 to 31 feet. I also saw a superb catch of walleye pulled from 21 to 23- feet of water off the Pinconning Bar yesterday. Several fish were over four pounds, the two best going seven and eight pounds. All came on crawler harnesses.
Some of the best walleye I have seen taken in years have been boated this week. Two boats out of our marina had several walleye in the six to eight pound class today.
Hot ‘N Tots are suddenly working quite well, as 50 % of our fish have come on the plastic lures the last couple of days. Both the 1/4-ounce and 3/8-ounces “Rattlers” are producing well, especially the “Rattlers”. We run the plastic off one side and crawlers off the other while trolling between 1.5 to 1.7 mph (GPS speed).
A couple of nasty thunder storms hit from Standish all the way up the shoreline to Oscoda shortly after noon today. Make sure to monitor weather channel 5 when storms are likely, as they will broadcast immediate warnings as to the storms’ intensities and their locations. If your “smart phones” are equipped with weather, check their radar from time to time to see how the storms are tracking across the state. Make sure to send a quick broadcast on the local fishing channel ( 68 and 72 out of Augres) to alert anglers who might not be doing any of the above. And then head for shore!
Be safe and good fishing!
