As of right now, with the Bays surface temps still in the mid-40’s, it is my opinion that the walleye bite is roughly 1 month behind. Not meaning the walleye are not biting now, just tactics that work during early spring (after ice out) are still working now. When by early May in recent years, things should be transitioning to live bait, staging locations in the water column and slightly warmer water techniques. But right now, Bombers in shallow, Husky Jerks and deep diving Rouges (all trolled dead slow) when in waters deeper then 7 feet, continue to be hot for me. Here’s a couple of pictures of a recent trip in 16 to 19 feet of water 5-4-14. Just be extra careful out there and don’t risk fishing heavy seas in smaller boats for a while yet, while these hypothermic water temps continue to warm. Be safe, fish smart and tight lines. Capt.
