Well, things have changed slightly since my last report. The walleyes
are getting a little harder to find and getting them to bite more of a
crap shoot. Guys fishing in one area do great and guys 1 mile away only
get a few. Not really anything that surprising if we were talking about
any place other then Saginaw Bay the last few years. I also went back to
running crankbait’s my last few trips with some fairly good results. I’m
running them with a slight twist. Most of the walleyes this year seem
more bottom oriented. I’m positive this has everything to do with the
changing forage base. Both Perch and Gobies are themselves bottom
dwellers, with the Gobies confined there mainly because they have no
swim blatters. This changed where the majority of the walleyes in the
bay now forage. Gone are the days of suspended hoards of Alewife with
the walleyes fallowing them. So instead of running tons of line out
while using cranks to get them down and near the bottom, I’m running
them short behind Keel sinkers almost virtually gouging the bottom.
Below are a few pictures of my last few trips and the walleyes I’ve been
catching while using this method. Be safe, fish smart and tight lines.
