Saginaw Bay continues to produce RED HOT walleye action! This summer has seen phenomenal fishing just about everywhere on the bay. The last three trips we’ve boated 80 walleye! Several local anglers had already limited out and were on their way back to port today as we were on our way to the fishing grounds at 0830. A friend of mine told me they have gone to a different area of the bay every time they have fished the last couple of weeks and caught limits of walleye. For the time being, it’s just not hard to catch walleye–unless you don’t go fishing!
The bay is starting to warm up with all this hot weather, and some of the fish are already moving north of the Big Charity. We had 75.4 F on the surface today. So far it hasn’t affected the fish at all.
Crawler harnesses are the tactic of choice, but two friends of mine each took three-man limits: one trolled only with spoons, while the other trolled with Smithwicks. Right now everything seems to be working.
With all the boats on the bay right now, some common courtesy has to be observed. DON’T crowd another boat you see catching fish just because you aren’t. DON’T troll east and west through a lot of boats that are quite obviously all trolling north and south. DON’T run at cruising speed through a pack of fishing boats. It’s not only bad manners on the water but dangerous as well. Some of the smaller 14-foot boats could be easily swamped by the wake of a cruising boat passing too close.
Be safe and good fishing!
